Most of the time SERVPRO crew members interact with people after they have suffered a water or fire damage, or need some sort of cleaning and repair. But, those of us at SERVPRO love having opportunities to connect with members of the community on brighter days. One of the ways we like to connect and interact with people is through being part of events in the community. 

We love being able to give back whether it's having a table and handing out SWAG bags at local golf events, donating to community programs like REAL Life Community Services, or volunteering on projects to better the community like the Denver-Ephrata Area Rotary Gun Club's Route 272 clean up this past weekend.

If you enjoy community events, don't forget to seek us out at upcoming ones like Adamstown Community Days and the Denver Fair! Also, coming up on April 27th is the Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans live basket auction starting at 4pm. All proceeds go to buying yarn and quilting materials to make lovely blankets for veterans in hospice. It is being held at the Ephrata American Legion. Don't miss out, we will see you there!

Earthquake in New Jersey felt as far as Lancaster, PA

On Friday at 10:23 in the morning an earthquake with the magnitude of 4.8 rocked much of the east coast. The epicenter was in Hunterdon County, New Jersey but the tremors and effects could be felt in Pennsylvania. Even people as far over as Lancaster County and Reading felt the shaking and heard the loud noise. 

Earthquakes aren't just scary to be a part of, they are dangerous and cause a lot of damage in an instant. Thankfully there has been no major damage reported from Friday's quake.

April showers can bring a lot more than just flowers, for many it can bring flood and water issues. Before the rainy season comes, here are a few tips you can follow to keep your house or business dry.

First, make sure your gutters are clear from leaves and debris that may have gotten stuck during the fall and winter seasons. Then make sure your down spouts are clear as well.

Sometimes downspouts can have unseen blockages that keep your gutters from doing their job, so make sure those are in good condition. Make sure the water exiting your down spouts will lead away from your house. 

Another thing to keep an eye on is the ground around your house. Keep the ground sloping down away from your house. If you notice the ground is sloping in toward your house water can puddle there and cause foundation leaks.

One of the perks of working in Lancaster County is getting to know the wonderful members of the community. One way we do that is by going into their homes in their times of need to help with fire and water damage.

Another, more fun way of getting to know everyone is by meeting them at community events. Thanks to the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce we have been able to participate in many fun events whether they were educational, empowering, or just enjoying meeting amazing people at Gracie's On Main for breakfast.

We've been lucky to work in such a friendly, welcoming town that has many people including first responders who love hosting events and getting to know everyone.

Fire Damage In Our Neighborhood

When fire trucks are using your drive way it's safe to guess there is a fire nearby. That's what happened this past week at our Adamstown SERVPRO. 

While chatting with clients we suddenly heard sirens blaring and saw lights flashing. After letting the trucks use our parking lot to set up we decided to talk to our neighbors to see if everyone was alright. 

Fortunately they were not hurt and their beloved cat, Creamsicle, was also safe and sound, but damage was done. Luckily we are only a stone's throw away and can be there to help them clean up. We can't wait until we can make it "like it never even happened."

Winter Is Here, Make Sure Your Home Is Ready.

Some days it feels like winter is coming, other days you can tell it's already here. The best thing you can do to prepare for it is to winterize your home. Here are some ways to do that: 

• Check the gutters: prevent water freezing and puddling because of full gutters.
• Protect your pipes: insulate those pipes that could be susceptible to freezing and keep a small stream of water running from a faucet on nights it's going to drop below freezing.
• Keep out the cold: Seal holes with caulk and get weather stripping for those drafty windows to help keep your heat bill down.
• Check your plumbing: consider installing an emergency pressure release valve on your plumbing to protect against bursting pipes and make sure you know where your main water shut off is.
• Get your heating system serviced: all heating systems should be checked and serviced at least once a year to prevent puff backs and other fire hazards from occurring.
• Check your alarms: make sure your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are in working order and have new batteries. Residential fires happen more often in the winter.
• Trim those trees: long dying branches and big trees can snap when they are blown in the freezing wind or covered in the weight of snow. They can easily do damage to nearby homes.
